Unintended humor

If a student laughs at another student’s answer, it is important to diffuse the situation right away. Do not let a student undermine one of their peers or your authority in the classroom. If you fail to correct this, other students might think they will be laughed at, too. If this happens, you can say something such as, “Now let’s consider this for a minute. When might this viewpoint apply?”

You are not immune to being laughed at, either. Some unintended slapstick is bound to happen: A door knob falls off when you grab it, the PowerPoint is so tiny no one can read it, the projection screen unexpectedly rolls up during a presentation — you get the idea. Do not ignore it, because that only increases the awkwardness of the situation. It also makes it appear as if you really are embarrassed. Acknowledge the blooper and move on. (“Oh well, so much for opening the door to knowledge.” “Did anyone bring a magnifying glass?” “Well, I really was not finished with that.”) There is nothing wrong with showing you are not infallible and that you have a sense of humor. These things can actually make you more likable, as long as your class is not in a constant state of equipment malfunctions.
